Travessia Beach Lodge | Inhambane
Wonderfully isolated Eco-Lodge - so unspoilt it feels like a secret.
Combine deliciously warm water and a glorious endless beach with true Robinson Crusoe style remoteness and you get Travessia Beach Lodge. Nestled between palm forest and the dunes lining the Southern Mozambican coastline, this is simple luxury at its best: quality, comfort and never too “done”. The lodge’s guided afternoon bushwalks introduce travelers to a picture book of rural African living: people busy with traditional food preparations, small scale farming and magnificent baobab trees, hidden in a sea of coconut palms.
The secluded casas have spacious decks, with hammocks and ensuite outdoor showers with panoramic views over the palm grove and ocean. All buildings are set on raised wooden decks with roll-up canvas walls under a thatched roof and in close proximity to the beach. The lodge is entirely solar powered – ensuring a light environmental footprint.
Off the beaten track yet easily accessible from Vilankulos or Inhambane, Travessia offers family practicality, villa privacy and true relaxation. Loved by families, couples and single travelers alike.
Casa Mavimbi has its private walkway into the palm grove and to the beach right from its deck. The room has spacious 30sqm with an indoor and outdoor shower. It is just a short walk to the pool deck.
The room can be set up as a King or Twin and spacious enough for an extra bed.
Casa de Mel is the most secluded of all rooms, approximately 150m away from the restaurant and lounge and tucked away behind an overgrown dune. It is a double room with king size or twin beds, mosquito nets, ensuite bathroom with separate toilet and outdoor shower, large deck with hammock and sea views. The room can accommodate one extra bed for an accompanying child.
Casa Tartaruga is our family room that can accommodate four people in either two king size or twin beds. It is equipped with mosquito nets, ensuite bathroom with separate toilet and outdoor shower, large deck with hammock and 180 degree sea views. The room is open plan, the two sleeping areas are seperated visually by a canvas wall. A fifth bed could be accommodated for a family of five.
Casa Baleia is a double room with king size or twin beds, mosquito nets, ensuite bathroom with separate toilet and outdoor shower, large deck with hammock and sea views. The room is approximately 80m from the main house and restaurant and has the shortest walk to the beach.

Beach Run: Wake up early to find coffee and tea on your deck and set off for a walk or run along the beach before breakfast. Except for one or the other fisherman, you will have the beach entirely to yourself.
Boogie Boarding & Kayaking: Kids off all ages have been braving the warm water and shore break with our boogie boards of all sizes and bigger boards are available for older children and adults. Our Fluid Buddy Kayaks are great to paddle out to see, once you mastered the shore break. For flat water Kayaking, join a half-day trip to LingaLinga and explore the mangroves of the Inhambane lagoon. Return to Travessia by lunch-time.
A scenic day trip to the Bay of Inhambane for an Ocean Safari provides you with the best chance you will ever encounter to swim with Whale Sharks. The coral reefs along the coast of Inhambane are famous for sightings of Manta Rays and Whale Sharks and the area has been earmarked to join the list of Marine World Heritage Sites.
After your first days in Mozambique you will have adapted to Mozambican time (in bed by 9pm, getting up with the first rays of sunlight) and waking up for an early breakfast will be easy for you by now!
Enjoy a 60min or 30min massage on your private deck. Chose from a selection of different massage styles, products are organic and homemade: Coconut oil for the massages or Avodado, Papaya and Honey for facial treatments, depending on your skin type.
A favorite activity among our guests, our bush and village walk is a casual stroll through the coastal forest, introducing guests to life and customs in the village. Guests will pass special sites like the rare baobab tree , the village pre-primary school or the local bush bakery. Depending on what the locals are busy with on that afternoon, food and Sura tastings may form part of this uncontrived experience. Depending on your level of fitness and curiosity, the walk may take anything between one or three hours.
The walk is for free. Any donations from guests to our “Village Fund” are welcome and will contribute to future projects to the benefit of the community, such as building and maintenance support for the local schools or infrastructure.
Explore the endless beach and the coastal forest on wheels. Our two fat bikes sport a 7- gear shift (of which you will probably only need 1-2 gears…) and are great for casually cycling along the shore line. Go just after low tide, when the sand is nice and solid.
For a shorter ride through the village (+/-30 minutes) grab our single gear "Mozambikes", specifically developed by a Maputo company for the needs and requirements of Mozambicans, and follow our little trail through the bush and the local communities.
Join the Travessia team on their shopping trip to Morrumbene, Massinga or Maxixe. Those small town markets usually cater for locals more than for tourists and allow for relaxed browsing. Look out for the colourful printed fabric the women of Mozambique tend to wear, or chose among the variety of woven baskets, between traditional food preparation tools and of course, lots of fruit, veggies and spices.
For a broader selection of curio items we recommend a trip to the market of Inhambane.
Travessia Restaurant & Food
Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner is served at Travessia's Restaurant, overlooking the palmgrove and the sea.
Breakfast is served from 7:00am: Continental style or health breakfast, hot breakfast to order, seasonal fruit, and a selection of bread or rolls from our local bush bakery.
Light lunches are served at the restaurant and can also be ordered from the Pool Deck. Chose between a selection of salads, wraps, burgers, local snacks and daily specials.
Dinners at Travessia Beach Lodge are set two or three course menus, always accompanied by a generous salad. The fish and crayfish are literally from sea to table and our chef’s homemade mango, passionfruit or coconut ice creams and sorbets are legend!
Occasionally, we turn our palm grove into an "al fresco" lounge for an open air cooked Paella, "Sea-food Potjie" or Barbeque, or for a private dinner for two under the stars.
